Oh Dear! Here he comes again, ready to pounce at the slightest hint of betrayal. For the past two months his increasingly choleric attitude has garnered him several new enemies. This game of cat and mouse would be bad enough is he was a cat. But, he’s a fax, with three years of battle scars to his credit. A worthy adversary who gulps down a mouse in one slurp, spitting the bones out in 1.5 minutes flat.

I’m a fox, freshly groomed, learning to creep slow, keep low, following instinct when encountering the wafting acrid aroma of a fresh kill. Sometimes keeping my nose too low to the ground, bumping into bullied who are professionals in the art of not sharing. Can’t be too careful when you don’t know the other diners at the table.

“Good morning, Meribelle. You look good enough to eat.”

“Grover, you cad!” I swoon backwards, putting three feet of drenched decaying leaves between us. “Hope you were successful in your hunting expedition down south.”

“Had to make do with a couple of chicks. What with one eye gone, and the other blinded by a sudden burst of solar energy, the rest of my breakfast scampered away.”

I began to edge away daintily, closer and closer to the river bank, securing each foothold with the pads of my paws, each loose rock and empty burrow of my territory memorized during weeks of extensive exploration. … I needed to get Grover away from tonight’s dinner. What could I say to convince him to leave? … “Yesterday I heard two partridges squawking about a mile east of here. You might want to check out the squabble. There was another voice, the most eldritch nasal quality I ever heard. Remember last week when you found that giant spider skewered on a stick beside the slough? …Maybe there’s another one, or something better…?”

“I see something better in front of me. No need to go messing with arachnid snacks when I’ve got lunch right in front of me.”

“Is that tub of lard you call a stomach too heavy to drag through the forest?”

With an unearthly wailing Grover threw himself at my haunches, scalpel-like claws missing by inches. He didn’t realize the rocky river bed had dried out, and I’m guessing his combined speed and trajectory falling 30 feet would crush the skull of even somebody as hard-headed as that buffoon.

Not only am I aware of all the empty burrows, but also those containing a sweet treat, something white and fluffy. Look at the wiggle, thinking she made it home sweet home. I knew there would be a delicious ending to this tail.

Celebrating the Festive Season – Again

Christmas may be over for another year. This does not mean the end of family get-togethers and visiting friends for winter’s celebration. For midway through winter, is another festive time of year. Many communities organize winter carnivals to get family and friends to get together to have fun and to break up a long winter.

The three largest winter carnivals in Canada, in order from largest are Bonhomme L’hivere (Quebec City Winter Carnival), Winterlude (Ottawa Winter Carnival), and Bon Soo (Sault Ste. Marie Winter Carnival). These winter carnivals celebrate winter fun and draw tourists from all over Canada, the United States and nations farther away. They are known for downhill and cross country ski races, snow sculptures, ice carving, dog sled racing, ice skating, hockey, live theatre, mascots, a large assortment of parties at various local establishments, fireworks lighting up the night sky, and the Beavertail pastries that can be purchased at different event sites.

Many communities hold local winter carnivals including Elliot Lake, Espanola and Blind River. In addition to the above events, they also offer cross country ski loppets, snowshoe golf, lantern ski outings, sleigh rides and a whole assortment of events both indoors and outdoors to get the family and friends together for some old fashioned fun.

If you find winter seemingly long, the winter carnival season is the perfect time for you and your loved ones as well as organizations you are involved with to plan activities similar to what you did at Christmas and in the run-up to Christmas.

Fun things you can do include a skating party at the local rink followed by hotdogs and hot chocolate, moonlight snowshoe outing over a frozen lake followed by a fun sing-a-long at a bonfire, a day at the ski hill followed by dinner, ice fishing followed by a fish fry, or cross-country skiing followed by a potluck supper. Perhaps if you are more adventurous, organize a trail rally puzzle tour or a progressive dinner all over town. Pretty soon, you will have another festive season to enjoy thanks to all the creative fun activities that will be almost like Christmas all over again. Come out and be creative, and soon winter will fly by quickly.

The Club was very successful with “Letting Go” Balloons, donated by Quality Flowers, which was very touching to see people release their burdens. At our booth, we began with Live Music played by our members and face painting for the youngsters and parents, all by Donation from the Public. Elliot Lake Meats & Deli, was very generous in donating all profits from the BBQ sales to the Fundraiser.

The Grand Total from the Event totaled to $591.15

These Funds will be used to help support the Club 90 program

With daily meals for the members & in special activities in the community.

On Thursday, afternoon we head for the hills

Beaver Mt. was the quest in mind and to the top we would climb.

We Learnt a few things along the way...

Like NOT to wear flip-flops on the Trails!!!

We learnt patience...

And enjoyed the sights of Dragonflies & Butterflies.

We Learnt that the view from the Top is worth the Battle Up!!

We also learnt, as can you that there are beautiful sights all around us we just have to take the time to stop, look and listen!

Lucifer threw the first punch, and Michael was sent into orbit, only to come crashing back down to earth. He got up, and the flash of white light was blinding; so blinding in fact that a normal human eye would be burned out of its socket. That is when the sky turned a blood red, and blood fell like rain.

“Do not underestimate my power, Michael,” The Devil said. “I am powerful in ways that defy description.”
“Ah, but you underestimate my power, little brother.”

And with that, Michael turned his hand in a circle, and blood came out of Lucifer’s mouth.

“You will bow down before heaven’s glory. I will kill you, Lucifer”

But The Devil, always full of surprises, reversed the spell and turned it on Michael.

“We can’t keep this up forever Michael. One of us is going to break.”

The question was, which one of them would break first?

In our hectic lifestyles, stress can build up, brought on by work, home and community life. When you feel overwhelmed, you want to get a break and head off into the great outdoors. Nothing would make you feel better than a summer canoe or kayak trip onto wilderness lakes and rivers.

The Elliot Lake area, as well as Algonquin Park, Quetico Park and many other places in the province and throughout Canada and the United States has prime canoe and kayak tripping destinations where you can embark on a trip from a simple afternoon outing to multi-day expeditions.

If you are a beginner, having just taken up the sport and need to learn how to do the “J” stroke, plan a trip or getting the canoe up for a portage, a great way to learn the skills is to join a club. We have a club in the area, the Algoma Paddlers Canoe and Kayak Club that organizes various day and overnight trips, workshops and instruction that you may consider joining. It is a great way to meet new people to go paddling with and to learn new skills. If you want to learn more about Algoma Paddlers, check out the website at

Organic Oatmeal Dried Fruit Cookies

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C)

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the vanilla. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg, gradually stir into the creamed mixture. Finally, stir in the quick oats and dried fruit. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto the unprepared cookie sheet.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

1 egg

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Off The Beaten Path - Spring Into Summer

As the days become longer and warmer, our outdoor recreational thoughts turn to camping and picnicking at area lakes. The month of May brings us a long weekend we consider the unofficial start of summer, that being the Victoria Day weekend.

Several area campgrounds open for the season including Mississagi Provincial Park just up the line as well as KOA over in Spragge and Westview Campground right in town. Backcountry camping is available on area lakes as soon as the snow is gone.

The weather is usually pleasant on the Victoria Day weekend and beyond, however the nights can still be chilly so bring a thick warm sleeping bag and extra clothes. After arriving at camp, make sure to erect a good size dining tarp; there may be rain showers and you want a dry place to do your cooking and relax. Also make sure to gather lots of firewood for when the sun goes down and it gets chilly, you would want to have a nice warm campfire to snuggle up to.

Spring is also an excellent time to do some fishing since they are quite active and you have a good chance at catching a few to cook for dinner. Other activities for this time of year include hiking and cycling.

Once you return from your spring camping or day trip, you will feel more energetic and motivated and look forward to summer fun in the outdoors. Club 90 usually organizes one or two camping trips. Watch for upcoming announcements on what’s happening outdoors.

A 1967 Chevrolet Impala rolled into the parking lot of an old, decrepit, abandoned building. The engine stopped. The headlights went out. It was almost midnight when Sam Winchester, along with his older brother Dean, stepped outside.

“You think it’s a trap?” Sam said.

“It’s always a trap,” Dean replied. “Although this time it’s a trap for that no good son of a…”

“Whoa, easy there tiger,” Sam said and shot Dean a troubled glance.

“Well, it’s good you boys came.” They both turned around and saw exactly who they wanted to see.

“Gabriel, well if this isn’t…”

“Can it you arrogant schmuck. We finally have your consents, so if you wouldn’t mind to step right up here. Dean Winchester, Sam. Before the final battle will begin, I just thought you should know that from the very beginning, ever since dad flipped on the lights here and created you… hairless little apes, we always knew it was going to end with you.

“You are the descendants of Cain and Abel, the first murder, and –“

“Hello, brother.” Sam said. But it wasn’t Sam; it was the original Choirmaster of heaven and King of Hell.

“Hello, Lucifer,” Gabriel said. Dean had a shocked look on his face. “Now, Dean are you ready to step up and play the part destiny has chosen for you?

“Oh, hello Dean,” Lucifer said and smiled; but it wasn’t a smile at all. It was a wicked scowl.

“If you don’t mind Lucy,” Gabriel said. “But Dean and I have some talking to do.” Gabriel snapped his fingers, and they were in the middle of a garden.

“Is this…”

“Eden? No Dean but this is what the world will look like if Michael wins. Michael must take charge, march across the land and defeat the serpent. It is written and so as it is written, so shall it be done.”

“You know how I feel about this,” Dean said.

“It isn’t Sam, and you know that.”

A tear streamed down Dean’s face. “If I do this, will Sam be ok?”

“I seriously doubt it. Are you ready to give yourself to the Kingdom of Heaven and take charge?”

Sick at heart and out of options, Dean nodded his head.

Michael looked through the eyes of his vessel.

“Gabriel, how are you brother?” he said.

“Well, Lucifer, I wish I could say it’s good to see you.”

“Please Michael, you might be able to fool dad, but you can’t fool me. I know you worship the ground he walks on, but please know he has done this to both of us.”

“God didn’t do this to us, Lucifer. You defied our Father and betrayed our race, and I have to stop you.”

“You can certainly try.”

“I really do wish we didn’t have to do this, but it is written and it must come to pass. So, are you ready to do what has been foretold since the beginning of creation?”

“I am.”

After another seemingly long winter, the month of March brings signs of warmer and nicer weather to come. As the days get longer and warmer, our thoughts turn to summer activities. With it comes the twice yearly changeover in outdoor recreational activities.

Now is the time to haul out your camping and fishing gear for summer and check everything over to see what needs cleaning, fixing and restocking so that everything is ready for outdoor fun when you are. Take stock of what is broken or missing; perhaps you need new fishing lures. Maybe the tent is missing some tent pegs and need to be replaced. Perhaps the backpack needs a new buckle to replace one that is broken, or maybe, your hiking boots need new shoelaces. Whatever the case, stores that carry outdoor supplies has everything you need to get your gear ready for summer fun.

While your attention is focused on getting your camping, fishing and other summer outdoor equipment ready, you also need to check over your winter gear that you just finished using before putting it away for the summer. Are your snowshoe bindings wearing out? Did one of your ski poles lose a basket? Or perhaps is your snowboard scratched after hitting a rock that “wasn’t there before” at the ski hill? All these things need to be looked after to ensure your winter equipment is in shape for the next winter and need to be stored properly for the off-season.

There will be a short period of time, the “between season” when you can’t do anything in the outdoors, but once the snow is gone and the ground dries out, you can look forward to summer fun on the trails, hills and lakes.

Some of you have been out a few times with Stephanie on snowshoe outings in the Horne Lake area this winter. Elliot Lake has lots of trails to explore, and with snow on the ground, getting around is easier in places when you put on snowshoes.

Snowshoeing has become very popular these days. This winter sport is inexpensive - all you need to buy are a pair of snowshoes. If you have difficulty with balance, you can also purchase an inexpensive pair of ski poles to help you get up the hills. As well, you can go just about anywhere. You are not restricted to established resorts unlike downhill skiing that cost big bucks.

Any existing hiking trail will do, or you can go cross country on uncharted territory. Just remember to bring a map and compass.

Snowshoes have changed over the years. The traditional snowshoes were made of white ash wood laced with rawhide webbing in a variety of styles and shapes. Then experiments were made in the 1970's with plastic snowshoes which, unfortunately, didn’t last long. Shortly after, aluminum framed snowshoes with aircraft cable lacing appeared, used mostly by Canada’s soldiers in the Canadian Armed Forces that proved to be very durable and light.

In the last decade, new age snowshoes appeared on the market with solid neoprene decking attached to tubular aluminum frames. Equipped with racheting bindings, the same kind found on snowboards, they are easy to put on, are light, and provide great floatation in deep snow. A crampon mounted on the bottom provides traction on slopes.

If you like to give snowshoeing a try, join Stephanie when she organizes snowshoe outings at Club 90. The Coureur de Bois Hiking Club also organizes snowshoe outings at least three days a week. If you want to go with the Coureur de Bois Hiking Club, they meet at 10:00 am Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays on the Upper Plaza across the road from Club 90. See you on the trails.

We are in the depths of winter when many people hibernate and can’t wait for spring. Others however, are making the most of it by having fun under the sky despite the cold weather. When we have bright sunny days, common in February, and the days are getting longer, why not plan a mid-winter campfire and barbecue.

I had seen quite a few people head out to the lakes for a cookout, even on the coldest day. All it takes to have a comfortable cookout lunch is some nice weather, lots of firewood and plenty of food and drinks.

Any food that you cook on the barbeque during summer can be done in winter as well. Steaks, hot dogs, hamburgers, shishkabobs, you name it, would be perfect fare for your winter cookout. Add salads, potatoes and casseroles and you have a delicious, balanced meal. Top it off with dessert: cake, mousse or whatever, you will have a meal to remember. It seems that cooking your meal outdoors make it taste better.

Perhaps you may want the evening campfire out on the shoreline. Getting there is easier; just cross the frozen surface to a favorite spot out of the wind, dig yourself a firepit, gather up the firewood and get a nice bonfire going. Now cook up some hot chocolate and roast some marshmallows. If you’re musically inclined, have a campfire sing-along. Pretty soon, you want to do more winter cookouts and campfires. And before you know it, it would soon be spring.

Start The Celebration With a Cheer

Christmas may be over and many people dread the long winter that follows. However, there is another time of celebration coming. Many communities organize winter carnivals to get family and friends together for another round of celebrations, parties, potluck dinners, outdoor and indoor fun, enjoying favorite winter sports and other games.

Sault Ste. Marie and Ottawa are home to the largest winter carnivals in Ontario. The Bon Soo Carnival in Sault Ste. Marie and Winterlude in Ottawa both take place during the first full week of February, beginning February 4 and running through to February 13. There are all sorts of activities for young and old. The fun includes building snow sculptures, ice skating – Ottawa has 8 kilometres on the Rideau Canal, pancake breakfasts, hockey games, concerts, comedy, outdoor games, relay races, sleigh rides and more. Fore the more active and perhaps livelier bunch, there is jibbing – skiing and snowboarding on rails and tables, snow canoe races, bungee skiing, polar bear swims, even crashed ice – downhill ice skating.

We also have our own winter carnival. The Elliot Lake Winterfest takes place February 24 to 27 with events at the lake near Spruce Beach, Collins Hall, Mount Dufour Ski Hill, Lower Plaza, and Horne Lake. The CTV Ice Fishing Derby on Horne Lake is a popular event. You can take bowling to a new hilarious level with turkey bowling by bowling frozen turkeys across the main square. Or you can be more adventurous, by going white-water canoeing – literally, down the slopes at Mount Dufour. Or if you can’t wait for summer to play your favorite outdoor sports, there are winter adaptations of baseball – snowpitch, snowshoe golf, and snow volleyball.

When you have your fill of outdoor fun and need to warm up, you can take part in indoor activities as well. Dances and concerts take place at Collins Hall and at the Pearson Civic Centre. A pancake breakfast takes place at the Renaissance Centre – the Ren-Cen. And there are activities you can organize and create yourself. Winterfest is the perfect time to organize a potluck supper. Just create your favorite entrée, appetizer and dessert to share with all the participants. Perhaps you can have a winter sing-along after, watch movies or play games.

Don’t be bored. Get out and have fun. You’re sure to enjoy the “other festive season” with Winterfest

If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck at all. “She’s on a losing streak” the relatives would conspiratorially whisper, secretly glad they were not me. … Be the best You can be … they demand while standing an inch from my face, invading my space. Don’t get your nose out of joint, it’s just a few scratches on the car, a few nights hanging with hookers in bars, a few scrapes on the knee, a few rugs covered in cat pee, a few scuffles with foes no bigger then buffaloes.

You are an odd duck. No need to cry over split milk. You’re down in the dumps. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start again. Don’t put off till tomorrow what you can do today……. Once bitten, twice shy, I cry. Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining.

She certainly bit off more than she could chew. We will help you. We were not yanking your chain. Listen to use we tell only the truth. Go jump in the lake the urge. Time to sink or swim. … Where do you think you’re going. Don’t expect to go out in a blaze of glory.

A hospital intern caught me climbing the walls on my way through the roof. In a most pleasant f bedside manner he remarked Flipped your lid … I see … Did you Drive Yourself crazy. No, I shrieked, I had help. They got under my skin. Creeping and crawling and caterwauling. Get a grip, your losing your mind, the intern intones as I shake my head vigorously in hopes of dislodging the plump lump. With a knowing nod he calmly continued. I understand you’ve hit every dump on the road, been kicked when your down … Have you ever felt that you are tetering on the edge?

A kind doctor removed the obstruction. As easy as pulling a knife through hot butter. A lobotomy in not everyone’s Cup of Tea … But it seems to have done the trick. … What will happen next?

That’s a no-brainer.

Look what the cat dragged in. Well if it isn’t You again. Long time no see. Thought we had seen the llast of You. Hey, Goddy-Two-Shoes, haven’t you heard. The good, they die young. You’re getting long in the tooth.

She can’t do anything right. You’re walking a slippery slope. One foot on a banana peel, the Other in the grave. When Push come to Shove, it’s Time to Lend a hand.

Dear Club 90,

Dr. Suddiqui sees me in the right direction, I’ll be off my medical needle she says, going for treatment for drugs and alcohol is the first step. This is my ten years of work to find out my life is worth more, I am motivated in the society and learning more every day.

Medicine and counseling, determination to survive and function better, I have strength to acquire knowledge of my physical and mental addictions being able to help others as well through a long time of helps and friendships.

I now have knowledge on addiction and I am going to school and counseling in the New Year. But further, gained respect for others that may be just like me. Always trying to volunteer, was a great skill to learn, it opens opportunities and qualities that give hope in people’s lives.

Always reaching out was great because it allows us to be friends which will open doors so that others will think so themselves and they will try to get help as well. But becoming my own person and doing what is best for me with every little step it will take, I am strong and willing to get there and lead my life in the right direction, positive and healthy without drugs and alcohol.

I am going to the treatment center on January 11^th to find out if I am accepted for treatment. I thank you all at Club 90 for your help and your support. If it wasn’t for all of you being there for me, telling me to take my medicine and remembering to ask for help. I would be alone fighting a Concurrent Disorder, due to my drug abuse and relying on only drugs of choice, I’ve struggled to break free but now have the chance once again to make things right.

1980 is usually remembered as the year that Friday the 13^th was unleashed upon then modern society, and for the monstrous success of Back in Black. I bet you if you went up to somebody and asked them if they remember an album called “Don’t Say No”, odds are they wouldn’t, Which is a real shame because it is a piece of music history and a real gem from the rock cannon. Former Piper guitarist Billy Squier gives us an album full of blues – inspired riffs, great solos and a sound that is almost identical to Zeppelin.

The best songs on the album are Lonely is the Night, and the Stroke. The Stroke is a blend of Van Halen and Motley Crue, while Lonely captures that full, seductive sound of Zeppelin meets Ac / Dc. This is a true masterpiece of classic rock and should be picked up by any fan of the genre.

We had a successful day with our Christmas Fundraiser
Hosted at the Mall, we sold baked goodies and wrapped presents for the busy last mintute shoppers.
We raised $210.00, but after our expenses we came out on top with $100.00 profit.
Overall we had a great day,
Thank You to all our Volunteers, with baking, sales and moving locations,
Without all Your Help our fundraiser wouldn't have been possible.

Mobile Crisis Response Cancelled!!

It has been announced, that the Mobile Crisis Response Team in East Algoma, will be terminated, as of March 31^st. It has been announced that the saved dollars, will now be used to increase day time service 8:30am -4:30pm.

The Ministry of Health, some ten years ago, funded this program to provide Crisis Response 24/7/365 days to the District of Algoma through the Sault Area Hospital for people with Mental Illness. “The goal is to have the Mobile Crisis Response Team arrive at the office within 30 minutes. “The Mobile team works very closely with the Crisis Department to ensure staff safety and to provide the best possible service to the client” says McLean.” http://www.sah.on.ca/index.php?pageid=260&news_id=44

? Would it help you to call a ‘warm-line’ in the evening? – A person who listens to you, who you could talk things over with when you’re experiencing crisis?

What do we mean by a warm-line?

It is a place to call when you need to connect with trained Peer-Support Survivors. Reasons for calling might be needing support, feeling isolated, or learning about some recovery skills. Some call because they are feeling frightened, sad or had a great day or wanted to share a success.
